Senior Mine Water Specialist (Biogeochemistry / Process Engineering)

Job Description

Our client is seeking a Senior Mine Water Specialist to lead and support the delivery of complex mine water treatment and water management projects within Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, or Saskatchewan, SK.

This is a multidisciplinary role suited to candidates with expertise in biogeochemistry, process engineering, or mine water treatment systems, with the ability to contribute across project phases—from research and pilot testing through to full-scale design and implementation.

You will play a key role in developing innovative, sustainable water treatment solutions, working on high-profile mining and energy projects while collaborating with technical teams, clients, and regulators.

Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Lead and contribute to mine water treatment and water management projects from concept through to implementation.

  • Support feasibility studies, pilot programs, and full-scale system design.

  • Provide technical leadership across passive, semi-passive, and active treatment systems.

Design & Engineering

  • Design and evaluate water treatment systems, including biological, chemical, and physical processes.

  • Contribute to engineering deliverables such as process designs, water balances, hydraulic analysis, and technical reports.

  • Support development of treatment strategies for metals, nutrients (e.g., nitrogen), and emerging contaminants.

Data Analysis & Applied Science

  • Analyze water quality, geochemical, and/or microbiological datasets to inform design and optimization.

  • Interpret pilot and operational data to provide recommendations and performance improvements.

  • Apply scientific and engineering principles to solve complex water treatment challenges.

Research, Testing & Innovation

  • Support or lead pilot-scale and lab-scale testing programs.

  • Contribute to technology development and implementation, particularly in passive and semi-passive systems.

  • Bridge the gap between research and real-world application.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, environmental, and operations groups.

  • Engage with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, and technology providers.

  • Contribute to technical proposals, reports, and presentations.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate team members.

  • Support internal knowledge sharing and development of best practices.

Requirements

We are open to candidates with strengths in one or more of the following areas:

  • Mine water treatment (passive, semi-passive, or active systems).

  • Biogeochemistry / environmental microbiology/geochemistry.

  • Process engineering / industrial water treatment design.

Core Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in mine water treatment, industrial water, or related fields.

  • Strong understanding of water chemistry and treatment processes.

  • Experience working on multidisciplinary engineering or environmental projects.

  • Proven ability to analyze complex datasets and translate findings into practical solutions.

  • Excellent communication, reporting, and client engagement skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Flexible Based on Background)

  • Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Environmental Engineering, Geochemistry, Microbiology, or related field
or a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/Process Engineering or related discipline with relevant experience.

  • Experience with:

    • Passive/semi-passive systems (wetlands, bioreactors, pit lakes)

    • Industrial or mining water treatment system design.

    • Pilot testing, lab work, or field programs.

    • Water balance modelling or process simulation tools.
