Job Description

This position plays a pivotal role in expanding market presence and delivering high-quality civil engineering projects within the Calgary region. This individual will be responsible for identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, cultivating client relationships, leading proposal efforts, and overseeing the successful execution of projects from inception through completion. The ideal candidate brings a blend of technical engineering knowledge, business acumen, and strong interpersonal skills. This role reports into the VP, Engineering Public Sector, working with the Community Infrastructure team in Calgary.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, develop, and pursue new business opportunities aligned with the company’s strategic growth objectives.

  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of prospective clients and projects.

  • Represent the company at industry conferences and networking events to enhance brand visibility.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define and execute market growth strategies.

  • Track competitor activity and market trends to identify positioning opportunities.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key clients, fostering long-term, trust-based relationships.

  • Conduct regular client engagement meetings to understand evolving needs, priorities, and satisfaction levels.

  • Proactively address client concerns and ensure a consistently high standard of service delivery.

  • Manage client expectations throughout project lifecycles, ensuring transparency in scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Expand existing client accounts by identifying opportunities for additional services and repeat business.

  • Lead the preparation of compelling proposals, qualifications packages, and presentations.

  • Manage proposal schedules and review processes to ensure quality and on-time submission.

  • Coordinate with technical staff to develop project approaches, work plans, staffing plans, and fee estimates.

  • Craft persuasive, client-tailored narratives that clearly communicate the firm's value proposition.

  • Track win/loss outcomes and implement lessons learned to continuously improve pursuit effectiveness.

  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams including civil, structural, environmental, geotechnical, and survey disciplines.

  • Define project scope, objectives, schedules, and budgets in collaboration with clients and internal stakeholders.

  • Monitor project performance against KPIs, proactively managing risk, scope changes, and resource allocation.

  • Mentor and develop junior staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture.

  • Coordinate with subconsultants and specialty contractors to ensure integrated and seamless project delivery.

  • Ensure all deliverables meet quality standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (required).

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or related field (preferred).

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation (required).

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (preferred).

  • Minimum 6 years of progressive civil engineering experience, with at least 4 years in a project management or client-facing business development role.

  • Demonstrated track record of winning new business and growing client accounts in a consulting civil engineering environment.

  • Experience with public sector clients (municipalities, provincial/state agencies) is a strong asset.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proposal and technical report writing.

  • Strong commercial acumen with an understanding of fee negotiations, contract terms, and financial performance.

  • Proficiency in project management tools and platforms (e.g., MS Project, Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint, or similar).

  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to build consensus and influence without direct authority.

  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial mindset with the drive to grow a book of business.

  • Ability to manage multiple pursuits and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

  • First aid training is an asset
