Job Description

Our client, a land development engineering consulting firm, is seeking a Municipal Engineer - Conveyance with a passion for the buried infrastructure that keeps communities running. In this role, you will work collaboratively within the Municipal Infrastructure practice to lead the planning, design, and management of underground conveyance networks – water distribution, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and force mains. This is a technical delivery role focused on the full life cycle of linear infrastructure: inspection and condition assessment, asset management, rehabilitation, repair, replacement, upgrade, and extension. You are equally comfortable with open-cut (trench) and trenchless approaches, and you bring both to bear in choosing the right solution for each project’s ground conditions, risk, and constraints.

You will deliver projects with sustainability and resilience at the forefront – extending the life of aging systems, adapting to climate and growth pressures, and getting the most from every infrastructure dollar. You will draw on your understanding of municipal servicing standards and construction methods as you move projects from assessment and planning through design and construction. You will participate in proposal development, author technical reports, and – as our practice grows – advise and mentor other team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, design, and manage underground municipal conveyance projects – watermains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, force mains, and appurtenances – from inception through construction completion.

  • Assess the condition of existing buried infrastructure using inspection data (e.g., CCTV, flushing and zoom surveys, structural and hydraulic evaluation) to inform renewal decisions.

  • Develop asset management and prioritization strategies that balance risk, condition, level of service, and life-cycle cost.

  • Recommend and design rehabilitation, repair, replacement, upgrade, and extension solutions for aging and growing networks.

  • Evaluate and apply both trench (open-cut) and trenchless methods – including pipe bursting, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, sliplining, horizontal directional drilling, and microtunnelling – selecting the approach best suited to site conditions, risk, and cost.

  • Embed sustainability and resilience into design, considering climate adaptation, material durability, and long-term system performance.

  • Develop and review engineering design drawings, specifications, and contract documents.

  • Perform construction site inspections and contract administration, ensuring compliance with design, specifications, and applicable standards.

  • Coordinate designs and inspections across multiple disciplines and with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Participate in proposal writing and business development.

  • Support multi-disciplinary projects such as transportation, land and site development, and urban renewal.

  • Author and present technical documents, including reports, memos, design briefs & drawings, to clients, regulatory agencies, and the public.

  • Help coordinate projects to ensure successful completion on time and on budget.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technologists.

  • Stay up to date on technologies, materials, regulations, and industry trends related to municipal conveyance and trenchless engineering, and apply relevant knowledge to projects.

  • Apply and promote health, safety, and quality procedures.

Requirements

  • Registered as a P.Eng. (or eligible for immediate registration) with APEGA.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in municipal infrastructure engineering, with demonstrated project delivery and construction administration.

  • Working knowledge of water distribution and wastewater/stormwater collection systems.

  • Practical understanding of trench and trenchless construction methods and their appropriate application.

  • Familiarity with municipal servicing standards (e.g., EPCOR, City of Calgary, and other Alberta municipal standards).Experience with condition assessment and asset management of buried infrastructure.

  • Hands-on experience with construction observation and contract administration.

  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

  • Experience with hydraulic modelling software such as WaterCAD, SewerCAD/SewerGEMS, PCSWMM, or similar is considered an asset.

  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS is considered an asset.

  • A graduate degree and/or specialized training in municipal or trenchless engineering is considered an asset.

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Suite of products.

  • Experience with Google Workspace.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Own a dependable vehicle and be licensed to operate a vehicle in Alberta.

  • Ability to pass a background check.
