Systems and Automation Engineer/Technologist
Job Description
Our client is a growing engineering company in Alberta focused on Operational Technology (OT) spanning instrumentation, electrical, and automation infrastructure. They are seeking a Systems and Automation Engineer/Technologist with a broad background and 8–12 years of experience to successfully oversee lifecycle engineering and system integration on critical control infrastructure for complex multimodal client facilities.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership and support as a member of their project teams, applying your knowledge across DCS and PLC architecture planning, design, and applications to greenfield and brownfield projects.
The ideal candidate has a track record of working in an operating plant environment integrating Industrial Control Systems (ICS) with business networks, and approaches complex, cross-platform system challenges with a systemic, root-cause methodology. If you take ownership, embrace teamwork, ask questions, and make improvements, you'll be a great addition to their team.
Preference will be given to candidates with Honeywell Experion PKS experience — including hybrid C300, eHPM, and virtualized UOC environments — and experience with deterministic data pathways across critical third-party systems including Emerson Tank Management and Atmos Leak Detection.
Responsibilities:
DCS & PLC System Engineering (70%)
Design, implement, and commission DCS and PLC systems for client facilities, with a focus on Honeywell Experion PKS environments including hybrid C300, eHPM, and virtualized UOC configurations
Maintain and optimize hybrid execution environments, managing boundaries between legacy modules and modern controllers
Identify and resolve DCS/PLC reliability issues working cross-functionally with Operations, Maintenance, and Process Engineering
Develop long-term system upgrade and maintenance plans, and prepare conceptual engineering solutions including scope, cost estimates, and implementation planning
Specialized Systems Integration (20%)
Engineer and maintain deterministic interfaces between inventory management, custody transfer, and supervisory control systems — experience with Emerson Tank Management, Honeywell BMA, and Atmos Leak Detection is an asset
Design and implement ASM-compliant grey-scale HMI displays and support Experion Orion Console administration
Design and maintain Fault Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) networks and oversee control system virtualization performance and network routing
OT Networks & Cybersecurity (10%)
Support design, maintenance, and integration of client OT networks, ensuring redundancy, stability, and alignment with recommended practices
Apply vendor-approved patches, hotfixes, and anti-virus updates, and support backup and disaster recovery procedures
Participate in network monitoring, configuration management, health checks, and OT cybersecurity standard implementation
Travel to client sites for project execution as required, in full compliance with HS&E, work permit, and management of change requirements
Requirements
A technical diploma or university degree in a relevant discipline is required
8+ years of experience with Industrial Control Systems (ICS) in a design and/or maintenance role is required
Engineering experience in Honeywell Experion PKS, with hands-on configuration of C300, eHPM, Orion console displays, FTE networks, and virtualized UOC controllers is preferred
Experience managing virtualized servers and workstations, enterprise server hardware, and firewalls; network management and monitoring (e.g., SolarWinds); system backup and restore
Preference will be given to candidates with experience implementing ICS cybersecurity standards (e.g., IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82)
Experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, pulp and paper, or electrical power systems
Proven ability to work closely with client operations, engineering, maintenance, and leadership in demanding site-based roles
Proven ability to approach complex, cross-platform system challenges with a systemic, root-cause methodology
Strong communication skills and the ability to build functional relationships with all stakeholders
Experience delivering high-quality customer service to a broad range of customers
Willingness to travel — travel to customer sites in Western Canada will be required
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
