Health & Safety Lead
Job Description
Our client is seeking a Health & Safety Lead with a passion for safety leadership to join their Operations team in Calgary, AB or Drayton Valley, AB.
This is a strategic and hands-on role suited to someone who can balance high-level program leadership with practical field execution, someone who wants to build and modernize a Health & Safety Management System, embed a strong safety culture, and leverage data and technology to drive better decision-making. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, you'll serve as both a trusted advisor and a visible leader across operations.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Safety Culture
Act as the principal Health & Safety Advisor to the Chief Operating Officer
Champion a strong safety culture across all operations
Serve as a visible safety leader through routine field engagement
Coach supervisors and operations leaders on effective safety leadership
Develop initiatives that strengthen organizational ownership of safety performance
Promote a culture of planning, learning, reporting, and continuous improvement through transparency
Health and Safety Program Management
Audit, evaluate, and continuously improve the current Health & Safety Management System
Lead the development and maintenance of Safe Work Practices, Contractor Management Programs, Emergency Response Plans, Incident Investigation Programs, Hazard Assessment Programs, Occupational Health Programs, and Training and Competency Systems
Ensure programs comply with regulatory requirements and industry best practices
Champion Incident Review Panel Sessions
Provide Occupational Health & Safety oversight in Process Safety Development and Implementation
Digital Transformation & Safety Analytics
Implement and enhance digital safety management systems
Support electronic incident reporting and investigation tools
Lead development and implementation of digital inspection and audit platforms
Develop functional leading and lagging indicator dashboards and meaningful KPIs
Use data analytics to identify risk trends and prevention opportunities
Evaluate emerging technologies, AI applications, and digital tools that improve safety performance
Regulatory Compliance & Governance
Ensure compliance with applicable Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation
Support compliance with AER requirements and industry standards where necessary
Manage external audits and regulatory inspections
Monitor legislative changes and advise leadership on regulatory obligations and risk mitigation strategies
Incident Investigation & Learning
Lead significant incident investigations and facilitate root cause analyses
Ensure corrective actions are developed, implemented, and verified
Develop and communicate lessons learned, and use incident data to drive continuous improvement
Contractor Safety & Operational Support
Support contractor qualification and performance management processes
Conduct field audits and inspections
Participate in operational planning and risk assessments where necessary
Training & Competency Development
Provide competency assessment oversight through the utilization of CMDS
Develop and deploy a Site Supervision Competency program
Coordinate and deliver Health & Safety training programs
Build organizational capability in hazard identification, risk management, and safety leadership
Requirements
Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or a related discipline (preferred but not required)
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation strongly preferred but not required
Root Cause Analysis Training required
Minimum 10 years of progressive Health and Safety experience within upstream or midstream oil and gas operations
Minimum 5 years of leadership experience preferred
Demonstrated success developing and implementing Health & Safety programs and systems
Strong experience supporting oil and gas production, facilities, pipelines, maintenance, drilling & well intervention operations
Experience working with digital systems or data-driven performance management processes considered a significant asset
