Assistant General Counsel - Calgary, AB

Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced and pragmatic legal professional to join their team as an Assistant General Counsel on a one-year contract. This role supports a broad range of legal services across the organization, including corporate legal matters, privacy compliance, litigation, policy development, and disciplinary proceedings. The successful candidate will work closely with various internal departments and stakeholders, exercising sound judgment and providing timely legal advice in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice on corporate policies, procedures, and operational issues

  • Identify and analyze legal risks and emerging issues

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal instruments

  • Advise on the interpretation and application of relevant legislation and internal policies

  • Manage litigation matters including civil actions, debt enforcement, and insurer consultations

  • Provide legal support related to disciplinary hearings and appeal processes

  • Facilitate hearing panel training and ensure adherence to legal standards of fairness and natural justice

  • Review and assess compensation applications related to consumer protection claims

  • Recommend and enforce debt recovery strategies where applicable

  • Support corporate compliance with privacy legislation and internal privacy policies

  • Provide legal input on privacy requests, policy development, and organizational training

  • Assist with development and interpretation of corporate policies and regulatory submissions

  • Draft legislative and policy position papers as needed

Requirements

  • Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.)

  • Active membership in the Law Society of Alberta

  • Minimum 5 years of Canadian legal experience

  • Experience in an in-house corporate or regulatory legal department (minimum 2 years preferred)

  • Strong understanding of administrative, employment, privacy, and professional regulatory law

  • High-level written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities

  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and perform under pressure

  • Strong analytical and advisory skills with a practical, solutions-oriented approach

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, MS Teams, SharePoint, and legal database tools
