Geologist - Smithers, BC

Job Description

Our client is a mining company currently advancing the development of a metallurgical coal project located in northwest British Columbia. As part of a larger international resource group with operations in New Zealand and joint venture interests in Canada, they are committed to producing high-quality steelmaking coal for global markets. The organization maintains offices in both Vancouver and a nearby project community and has recently formalized its Canadian presence through a newly registered entity.

About the Project
The proposed development site lies approximately 25 km south of Smithers and 7 km from a nearby community, in an area with a history of coal mining dating back to the early 1900s. The project re-entered the BC Environmental Assessment process in 2018, and is currently progressing through regulatory review with production anticipated to begin in 2026.

Once operational, the mine is expected to produce between 775,000 and 825,000 tonnes of metallurgical coal annually over an estimated 25-year life, including construction, operations, and reclamation phases.

Responsibilities:

  • Exploration Programs

    • Plan and lead geological mapping, sampling, and drilling programs

    • Interpret geological datasets to support exploration strategy

    Resource Modeling

    • Compile and assess exploration data to produce accurate resource estimations

    • Update resource models based on ongoing data collection and analysis

    Coal Quality Assessment

    • Maintain and analyze coal quality data to support mine planning

    • Work closely with operations teams to align production with quality targets

    Geochemistry Database Management

    • Oversee and interpret geochemical data to support extraction planning

    • Identify any geotechnical risks or extraction considerations

Requirements

  • Degree in Geology or related discipline

  • Minimum 5 years in mineral exploration, with at least 2 years in coal

  • Strong experience with geologic modeling and interpretation

  • Proficient in mapping, logging, and managing drilling campaigns

  • Skilled in geochemistry and geophysical data analysis

  • Familiarity with geological software such as Leapfrog, ArcGIS, Minesight, and acQuire
