Intermediate Linux System Administrator - 12-month contract
Job Description
Our client is a not-for-profit agency whose mission is to improve the lives of Albertans through the use and advancement of digital technologies. Serving Alberta’s education, enterprise, research, and government sectors, our client provides a range of services to its members, including a regional Security Operations Centre (rSOC) that monitors, detects, and responds to cybersecurity threats targeting Alberta’s post-secondary institutions.
We are currently looking for a purpose-driven Intermediate Linux Systems Administrator to join the team in Calgary for a 12-month contract. This role will help manage a unique hybrid technology environment, ranging from bare-metal OpenStack clusters to advanced public cloud integrations.
Responsibilities:
Deploying and managing research and education platforms that support Alberta’s research and education community, including public cloud environments, regional security tools, and collaborative data environments.
Managing the full infrastructure lifecycle, from physical hardware maintenance through to scaling environments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
Supporting the modernization of infrastructure operations through best practices in Kubernetes, Prometheus monitoring, and automated configuration management using tools such as Ansible and Puppet.
Providing technical Tier 3 support to member organizations within the public and education sectors, helping them integrate their systems with our client’s public cloud and logging tools.
Troubleshooting and maintaining hardware, operating systems, virtualization, containers, and complex infrastructure environments.
Supporting applicable projects through a compensated on-call rotation.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation and hands-on experience working with complex infrastructure environments. Key qualifications include:
Strong Linux systems administration knowledge, including comfort working with the Linux kernel and shell environments.
Experience with virtualization and container technologies, along with a hands-on approach to hardware troubleshooting.
Strong understanding of system monitoring, observability, and alerting principles, including metrics, logs, and traces.
Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ClickHouse, and Zabbix.
Experience managing hybrid and/or multi-cloud infrastructure, including private cloud orchestration platforms such as OpenStack and public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Understanding of data telemetry and log management, including the ingestion, transformation, and routing of high-volume logs and event streams.
Experience with technologies such as Vector, FluentD, or Kafka is considered an asset.
Experience with Kubernetes, Ansible, and/or Puppet is considered an asset.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
