Senior Planner
Job Description
Our Client, a National Transportation leader in Open Deck, Long Haul is looking for a new Senior Planner to Join its Southern Alberta team.
The Planner is a leader within our operations team, a critical component to our drivers’ success and a key driver of the achievement of our vision and success as a company. An effective Planner must be a highly proactive thinker, identifying problems, inefficiencies, and opportunities well in advance of anyone else in the organization.

Responsibilities:
The Planner is directly responsible for ensuring that the company achieves the following competing priorities:
Maximize customer satisfaction
Ensuring precise, compliant execution of all trucking deliveries
Ensure team is highly responsive to customer requests, acting with sense of urgency
Meet all timeliness expectations
Ensure communication of issues is honest, proactive, thorough and brought to clear resolution
Maximize driver satisfaction
Ensure well-orchestrated communication throughout the operation
Consistent execution, ensuring entire team organized, thinking proactively, and honoring their commitments to drivers
Balance allocation of desirable freight to ensure fair distribution across all drivers, including between owner ops and company trucks.
Be aware of driver concerns, and ensure they get passed through the appropriate channels.
Generate results
Maximize $/mile by optimizing network efficiency (trailer choices, matching quality round trips, minimize empty miles)
Maximize throughput through proactive planning and communication (ensure accurate ETAs, minimize time between trips or delays, identify inefficient schedules, educate and encourage dispatcher/driver to make good scheduling decisions)
Maximize logistics volume by communicating proactively with FCs, booking (or coordinate booking) 3rd party freight even when not needed, allowing more freight to be brokered (of course balancing other priorities)
Requirements
Detailed working knowledge of weights and dimensions regulations for both Canada and US.
Working knowledge of customs clearing procedures.
Working knowledge of Canada and US Hours of Service regulations.
Working knowledge of Canadian and US load securement regulations.
In depth understanding of driver pay and owner operator profitability.
Subject matter expert with annual over-dimensional permits, when they can be used, and when additional permits may be required.
Subject matter expert in all permit travel restrictions and permit conditions for all states and provinces that we travel through.
Organization- Systematic, exceptionally disciplined, and proactive, ability to identify problems and opportunities in the face of a high volume of activity and challenges.
Speed and Accuracy- Able to complete high volume of competing tasks with speed and accuracy under pressured situations. Quickly identifies errors or gaps in information.
Communication- Accurate, thorough and proactive delivery of complex information that is quick, clear & precise. Open and candid, and happy to explain reasons for decisions. Listen with the intent to understand.
Drive- Understand and balance competing priorities in a methodical way that is defensible with well structured logic. Never satisfied and constantly evaluating to optimize the status quo. Capable of visualizing complex network impact of small refinements, identifying opportunities and potential issues that are not obvious to the average person. Takes action and initiates change when required.
Personable- Build positive relationships with a variety of personalities (customers & coworkers) to achieve goals
Decision Making- Ability to make quick, thoughtful decisions with conviction, where competing priorities require balance and sacrifice, done despite lacking all required information. Processing information with speed and accuracy is critical to making quick, sound decisions.
Take command of the operation, ensuring high quality execution, proactively identifying areas of concern, and directing the actions required to resolve the situation.
