Senior Biogeochemist – Mine Water Treatment

Job Description

Our client is seeking a Senior Biogeochemist to lead and support passive mine water treatment projects across a diverse portfolio of mining and energy initiatives. This role combines technical consulting, hands-on testing, and interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions.

You’ll contribute to high-impact work by leading system design, data interpretation, and technical guidance while mentoring junior team members. The position is primarily office-based with opportunities for travel to laboratory and client sites, particularly in Saskatoon, for project execution and fieldwork.

Location: Calgary, Vancouver, or Saskatoon (or open to relocation)

Responsibilities:

  • Lead passive water treatment projects from early-stage studies through pilot, demonstration, and implementation phases

  • Design and analyze water treatment systems using geochemical, microbiological, and environmental data

  • Provide science-based risk assessments and modeling to support treatment system development

  • Interpret water quality datasets, apply calculations, and generate technical summaries for reporting

  • Oversee the preparation of proposals, figures, tables, and key report elements

  • Conduct senior-level technical reviews and provide mentorship to team members

  • Manage project timelines and communicate potential resourcing challenges

  • Drive improvements in workflow, quality, and team productivity

  • Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning

  1. Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Geochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Microbiology, or related field

    • Minimum of 10 years of applied experience in geochemical or microbiological analysis within environmental, mining, or water sectors

    • Demonstrated experience in client-facing advisory roles

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  2. Preferred Skills & Experience

    • Proficiency with spreadsheets, data analysis, and visualization tools

    • Laboratory and field experience in sampling, instrumentation (e.g., photometers, dosing pumps), and pilot project execution

    • Ability to interpret and act on scientific measurements in real-time

    • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving project needs

    • Strong team player with a collaborative, adaptable approach

  3. Assets (not required)

    • Experience with 16s community environmental microbiological analysis

    • Technical and non-technical writing for diverse audiences

    • Advanced data interpretation, statistical analysis, and scientific communication
